BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2 A/S Tire Review

BFGoodrich is simultaneously the improvement of the old all-season Super Sport A/S and the summer-only Comp-2 version. Many features make this model related to its previous incarnations, but BFG also added many new technologies.
So, when trying to make an opinion about Sport Comp-2 A/S, it would be prudent to compare them to other tires made by BFG previously – primarily to Comp-2 proper, since they are so alike.

What is it made of?

Like its summer version, Comp-2 A/S rubber body (and especially the tread) is very rich in silica components. That makes them more flexible, which suits the needs of an all-season tire perfectly. When on snow or ice, its flexibility improves navigation and handling very substantially.
Inside the rubber body, you’ll find two steel belts made from durable materials and further covered in nylon to improve the strength and formidability of these all-season tires.
Like their normal variation, they last for about 70,000 km worth of mileage on average, but this number can be decreased significantly if you drive them where they don’t belong – off-road, for instance. This longevity is due in part to the tread-resistant composition that includes durability-improving fillers besides silica components.
Despite all this, these treads are still much better in summer (on dry and wet) than in winter. If you want to be independent of weather conditions in winter, you’ll have to buy high-performance winter tires specifically for this purpose. But Comp-2 A/S tires do their job fine even so.

Tread features

This tire’s excellent handling capabilities are introduced by various technologies that make navigating different surfaces a doable task.
Silica is a good choice of an A/S tire precisely because this material is so flexible. It means, in addition to components that improve grip directly, you get the tread composition that can adapt to road conditions with ease – be that snow or ice. Although you don’t want to use them off-road, they aren’t suited for it.
There are several key technologies. Chief among them is the ‘Performance Racing Core’ – it grants better handling in general and especially when you’re driving at high speed. ‘Equal Tension Containment System’ makes these tires more versatile and easy to control.
If you drove in Sport Comp-2 before, you know about their g-hooks and g-control sidewalls. These little particles improve the grip whenever they touch the ground. As a consequence, you get improved traction on tread proper and on the sides. The latter one helps with turns and driving around corners very much.

As you can see, ensuring that a driver can be in full control of their vehicle regardless of weather, road condition or speed is the main objective here. BFG brought a lot of interesting technologies to help it, but there are also simpler perks.
The groove design is one thing. It’s different from Comp-2, because the summer treads had two wide circumferential grooves. On A/S tires, there are three of them, but they are not particularly wide. The reason for this decision is to increase the contact surface of the tread, no doubt.
Given the angular pointy shape of many blocks and bridges (shaped this way by the lateral grooves), this tread is very effective at sticking to the ground whenever you need it to. And don’t forget about the g-hooks, which improve the effect even further.

These grooves aren’t just for appeal, though. They are designed specifically to battle hydroplaning. There are many smaller vertical channels, and together with the big grooves, they help transport the water to the edges and then out. The entire system is designed in part to get rid of water as fast as possible.
This is why there’s almost no hydroplaning, and, consequentially, better grip on wet surfaces.

Comfort

Like its summer cousin and many other ultra high-performance tires, Comp-2 A/S treads are pretty loud when you wear them out too much. The rigidness doesn’t help, too. Because of the tread pattern, the shoulders are much blockier than usual. It definitely helps with handling, but the tires are rather stiffer as a result.
The ‘Dynamic Suspension System’ reduces the need in making the tires overly-stiff by strengthening them from within, which ultimately leads to softer and more comfortable driving. You can still sense when the road gets worse, though. The tires will let you know.

Final thoughts

Although these tires are good regardless of the season, they feel much better in summer. They are based off the summer tires, and BFG made some changes to improve the handling on ice and snow. It helped, especially since some components were already well-suited for winter. Still, they prefer summer over winter any time.

In cold, they behave well enough. They don’t get rigid or lose grip, but it still feels like specifically winter tires would do a better job. Their ultra high-performance isn’t for snow-covered roads, but for highway speeding.
Even so, BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2 A/S are great. You won’t race them across snow, but it’s not like many people do it anyway.
